Countdown to Cost Recovery Survey 2010 - Last Chance to Participate!
Mattern & Associates’ 2010 Cost Recovery Survey will close 5 pm Saturday, July 31st. If you haven’t taken the time to participate, please consider doing so today. All participants will receive a summary of the results, allowing you to benchmark your cost recovery efforts against other firms. This year’s survey includes several firms based in Canada!
Since our last survey in 2008, the economy has changed dramatically. What used to be a continuous revenue stream for most firms has, in many cases, decreased to a trickle. This is your chance to measure your firm’s efforts against 100 others. Mattern offers a variety of alternative cost recovery models to assist firms in boosting their cost recovery revenue and realizations.
To participate in the survey, click here and a customized link will be emailed to you. While your Firm name will be included on the participant list, the results are reported in aggregate, so none of your firm-specific information will be shared.

Hartford, Conn.-Based Robinson & Cole’s Reduces Off-Site Copy and Litigation Support Spend by 80-85% with Mattern’s Help
Robinson & Cole LLP, a Hartford, Conn.-based law firm with eight offices in the Eastern U.S. and more than 240 attorneys, recently came face-to-face with the fact that it needed to modernize and consider outsourcing its office services for the first time.
Robinson & Cole COO Nancy Hayes (photo below) noted that although many firms have been outsourcing office services for years, her firm historically preferred to have full-time employees to handle such duties as hand-delivering court documents, making copies and mail routing. Over time, it was becoming clear that keeping these services in-house was not really in sync with their desire to be an efficient, cost-effective firm.
Today, Mattern & Associates announced it has successfully completed a support services evaluation and outsourcing RFP project for Robinson & Cole. As a result of Mattern’s work on its behalf, Robinson & Cole (R&C) expects to save 22% from outsourcing office support services, and reduces its off-site copy and litigation support spend by 80-85%.

George Wolf and The Greg Wolf Fund – Generosity in Action
It is not often that in the course of business, or life for that matter, that one is struck by something that someone is doing that is so meaningful and “right” that it makes one step back and reflect. I had such a moment last night when I attended a fund raiser for the Greg Wolf Fund. The Greg Wolf Fund was established to commemorate the life of Gregory Joseph Wolf, by his family and friends. At the age of 20, Greg was diagnosed with leukemia and later succumbed to the disease. The mission of this fund is to honor Greg’s life as a “man for others,” and to perpetuate his generous spirit by giving back to the institutions and organizations that ultimately defined Greg’s life, in health, and in sickness.
My connection to this organization is through George Wolf, the Managing Director at Herrick Feinstein in New York City and Greg’s Father. George is a client but more importantly I count him as a mentor and a friend. I never had the opportunity to meet Greg but if he was like his Father, he was a remarkable human being. Instead of being bitter, George has turned Greg’s death into a remarkable charity event that is a tremendous testament to him.
What does this have to do with the support services and cost recovery? Nothing and everything. If you would like to make a donation the website is http://www.thegregwolffund.org

Last Chance to Participate in Mattern & Associates’ 2010 Cost Recovery Survey!
Time is running out — it is your last chance to participate in the Mattern & Associates 2010 Cost Recovery Survey! The deadline is July 15. Every two years, Mattern conducts this survey to assess how law firms are handling cost recovery. This year, Mattern expects the survey to show changes in the areas of print and scan recoveries at law firms, as well as shifts in overall cost recovery strategy. In 2008 when we last surveyed firms, the economic picture was quite different than it is now. Since we are well into the current economic downturn, it will be interesting to see if firms have changed their cost recovery policies to recoup more revenue.
All respondents will receive a summary of the Survey results.

Conscientious Cost-Cutting
By Rob Mattern
In the past year, law firms have focused more than ever before on substantial cost-cutting initiatives, with every element of the business scrutinzied. Many decisions, however, were made based soley on cost, with other factors being ignored.
What does a firm do when that isn’t enough - after requests for proposals (RFPs), short lists, vendor switches and tough contract negotiations still have not had a big enough impact on the bottom line? This is when a firm needs to unveil “The Strategy” - a fundamental, 180-degree shift in how the organization approches, structures and manages its support services operations.
